The second generation of the Land Cruiser Prado SUV, indexed "90", was presented to the public in 1996.

In June 1999, the car underwent a planned update, as a result of which it received a number of new security systems, and a year later a 1KD-FTV diesel engine was installed on it.

Serial production of the ninety-series SUV was carried out until 2002, after which it was replaced by a third-generation model.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 is a classic mid-size SUV with a frame structure.

The car was available in a three- or five-door body version.

Depending on the modification, the length of the car is from 4330 to 4690 mm, the height is from 1870 to 1880 mm, the width is 1820 mm, and the ground clearance is 230 mm. The three-door version has a wheelbase of 2365 mm, while the five-door version has a wheelbase of 2675 mm.

The curb weight of the car varies from 1710 to 1935 kg, and the gross weight - from 2500 to 2800 kg.

The luggage compartment of the three-door "Prado" 90-series has a volume of 450 liters (840 liters with the rear seat folded), the five-door - 750 liters (1150 liters).

For the second generation of the Land Cruiser Prado, three engines were offered.

  • Gasoline engines had a displacement of 2.7 and 3.4 liters, and their output was 150 and 185 horsepower (240 Nm and 303 Nm of torque, respectively).
  • 3.0-liter turbodiesel produced 170 "horses" and 343 Nm of maximum torque.

The engines were combined with a 5-speed "mechanics" or a 4-band "automatic", all modifications were equipped with an all-wheel drive system.

The 90th series of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was equipped with independent spring suspension front and rear. Ventilated disc brakes were installed on the front wheels, disc brakes on the rear.

The car feels great not only outside the roads (including rather serious off-road), but also on asphalt surfaces. Powerful motors provide good dynamics - depending on the modification, the SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.9 - 12 seconds, accelerating to a maximum of 165 - 180 km / h.

The "second" Land Cruiser Prado was developed as a car more adapted for off-road, but due to the lack of angularity of the exterior, it was perceived as "too urban model." In addition, a small selection of powertrains was offered for the SUV, which negatively affected sales. Perhaps these are almost the only shortcomings of the "90th".

The positive aspects of the car are good dynamics, inexpensive maintenance, unpretentiousness and overall reliability of the design, maintainability, fairly affordable spare parts, good handling, high level of comfort, excellent cross-country ability and a wide range of onboard equipment.

In 2017, in the secondary market of the Russian Federation, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado of the 90th series is offered at a price of 400 ~ 900 thousand rubles (depending on the condition and equipment).
