Mazda 2 is a front-wheel drive five-door hatchback of a subcompact category (aka “B-segment by European standards), which boasts a striking design, modern and ergonomic interior and a progressive technical component ... Its main target audience is urban youth (but first of all -“ representatives the fair sex "), not burdened with family and leading an active lifestyle ...

In October 2014, the Japanese company Mazda officially unveiled the third-generation Mazda 2 hatchback in specifications for the European market at the Rome International Film Festival, which became the serial embodiment of the Hazumi concept, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March of the same year.

The third generation Mazda2 subcompact hatchback is made with an eye on older models such as the Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5. As a result, it is designed in the spirit of Kodo design, and its construction uses the innovative SkyActiv technology (motors, gearboxes, chassis, body), and to be more precise - a simplified and shortened platform from Mazda3.

In October 2016, the five-door underwent a slight restyling, as a result of which it was slightly "refreshed" outside and inside, acquired new options and, most importantly, "armed" with the proprietary G-Vectoring Control system ... and in July 2019, the hatch was updated again, but on this time it was more serious - the exterior was corrected, the equipment was improved, the range of security systems was expanded and certain technical innovations were separated. In addition, the Japanese name Demio was abolished in favor of a "global name".

Externally, the "third" Mazda 2, due to the corporate style of Kodo, looks dynamic, purposeful and stylish. At the front, one can note the compact optics of the head light with lenses and LED inserts for daytime running lights (and, as an option, fully LED), the profile flaunts large doorways, a flat roof, a sloping hood and large rims, and the stern has a compact tailgate and neat side lights. Fashionable and sporty - this is about the "two" of the third generation!

The hatchback's length reaches 4060 mm, its height is 1495 mm, and its width is 1695 mm. The wheelbase of the five-door is 2570 mm, and its ground clearance (clearance) is 143 mm.

The curb weight of the vehicle ranges from 970 to 1040 kg, depending on the version.

The interior of the Mazda 2 looks no less modern and stylish. The front panel is endowed with a strict form and ventilation deflectors in an aviation style, a minimum number of buttons and controls are placed on it.

The leading role is assigned to the color touchscreen display of the MZD Connect multimedia system, which contains a lot of useful functions. The control unit for air conditioning or climate control is based on the small center console, and the gear lever and the control unit for the multimedia complex are located on the tunnel between the seats.

The salon of the "third" Mazda 2 has a five-seater layout, but only two adult passengers will be most comfortable on the second row. The front seats are endowed with an ergonomic profile with a high backrest and moderately developed lateral support, as well as sufficient adjustment intervals.

The small luggage compartment has the correct shape, but its volume is not impressive - only 280 liters in normal condition. The “gallery”, divided into two unequal sections, increases the “hold” capacity up to 950 liters when folded, but does not form a level platform. In the underground niche at the hatch hides a small "spare wheel" and a minimum set of tools.

Under the hood of the third generation Mazda 2, the specification for the European market hides the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines of the Skyactiv family:

  • The petrol versions relies on an "aspirated" with a working volume of 1.5 liters with direct fuel injection, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and variable valve timing, which is available in three boost options:
    • 75 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 135 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm;
    • 90 h.p. at 6000 rpm and 148 Nm of rotational potential at 4000 rpm;
    • 115 h.p. at 6000 rpm and 148 Nm of peak thrust at 4000 rpm.
  • The diesel version is powered by a 1.5-liter Skyactiv D turbocharged unit, a Common Rail battery power system and a 16-valve timing belt that develops 105 hp. at 4000 rpm and 220 Nm of torque at 1400-3200 rpm.

The motors are combined with two types of gearboxes that direct their full potential to the wheels of the front axle - 6-speed "mechanics" or 6-band "automatic" Skyactiv-Drive.

At the heart of the "third" Mazda 2 is a front-wheel drive "bogie" with a transverse engine and a monocoque body, in the power structure of which high-strength grades of steel are widely used. An independent MacPherson-type suspension is used on the front of the car, and a semi-independent system with a torsion beam ("in a circle" - with anti-roll bars) is used at the rear.

The hatchback has a rack and pinion steering mechanism with an electric power steering, and its brake complex is formed by ventilated discs on the front and drum devices on the rear axle.

On the Russian market, the third generation Mazda 2 is not officially sold, but in the countries of the Old World (to be more precise, in Germany), a car can be bought at a price of 13 390 euros (~ 950 thousand rubles).

As standard, the hatchback is equipped with: front and side airbags, ABS, ESP, 15-inch steel wheels, power windows, multifunction steering wheel, keyless engine start, audio system and some other equipment.
